Review - Miley Cyrus Live In Concert, Melbourne, Australia

Miley Cyrus is undeniably one of the biggest teen stars in the world right now. And although she's been in the public eye for what seems like decades, she's still only 18 years old. And last night at her first Melbourne concert she proved that she definitely isn't a little girl anymore.

Most famous for her role as Hannah Montana in the Disney show of the same name, the fans that turned out at Rod Laver Arena were definitely hoping to see the girl they've grown up with. However they may have been disappointed, because this concert was definitely all about Miley and not about Hannah.

Miley kicked things off with 'Liberty Walk', and possibly shocked a lot of parents with her raunchy leather hotpants and sequined bra. She followed it up with one of her most recognisable songs 'Party In The USA', and at this stage I can confirm that at Rod Laver Arena it was definitely a party in the AUS.

The highlights had to be her big songs. '7 Things', 'See You Again' and 'Can't Be Tamed' all drew huge responses from the crowd, and 'The Climb' had every girl on her feet and singing along. The bulk of the show was made up of album tracks, which were not as recognisable to the majority of the audience.

There were plenty of costume changes and sexy dancers, although there wasn't much that really reflected the Gypsy Heart theme of the tour. A few floaty dresses possibly were in reference to the title, but in general it was definitely a glam rock inspired show.

Miley definitely has the vocal ability to carry off the show. She sang live and demonstrated some reasonably good dance moves, although she has a very weird way of walking around the stage, almost hunched over. There wasn't much audience interaction or conversation, with much of what she said sounding very rehearsed.

Covers of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana and Fleetwood Mac's 'Landslide' probably went over the heads of the teens, who might have preferred a cover of something a little more contemporary. A Joan Jett medley of 'I Love Rock n Roll', 'Cherry Bomb' and 'Bad Reputation' was well received, and had me wondering why they didn't cast Miley in the recent Runaways movie.

My main criticism would be that the fans were expecting a bit more Hannah Montana -- so give them what they want. Miley has to remember that her Australian fans have never seen her perform as Hannah, and although she didn't need to put the blonde wig on maybe a few of the bigger Hannah Montana songs wouldn't have gone astray.

There was also no sign of her mum Tish or Aussie boyfriend Liam Hemsworth and his parents, and believe me I was on the lookout. I'm sure they were there somewhere, possibly hiding out the back or in a corporate box.

It remains to be seen whether Miley can compete with the Rihannas, Lady Gagas and Katy Perrys of the music world. So far she hasn't quite shaken off the teen image, despite all the sexy photoshoots and raunchy videos. But I think she still has a big career ahead of her.
