John Mayer Lifts the Lid on Sydney at Kia Soul Live at the Chapel!

05 November 2009

For the first time back on stage with a band behind him and introducing a handful of new songs from his Battle Studies album, John Mayer didn't disappoint by showing his raw musical talent in the live intimate surrounds at Kia Soul Live at the Chapel. On stage for just on a hour, he showed his Australian fans that he still can move a crowd both in looks and ability! The combination of his soulful voice and guitar sound backed up by a superb band was a great introduction back to the Chapel stage, following on from his 2006 performance.

Heavily dominated by new songs, most of which were new to the crowd, Mayer showed that he has made some solid transitions in his music from his previous albums.

From the innocent beginnings of the "Body is a Wonderland" singer/songwriter style to the R&B "Continuum" and now representing a more blues style and lyricism.

In his short time on stage (well let's face it, all the ladies could watch him for hours!), the crowd appreciated the new sounds he was bringing out with his new single "Who Says" captured so well in the small venue.

The crowd were made up of competition winners and media guests such as the Australian Idol finalists, Home and Away stars Jodi Gordon, Axel Whitehead and Rebecca Breeds, TV presenter Erika Heynatz and champion surfer Layne Beachley.

The opening strums of "Waiting on the World to Change" in a live atmosphere, with him just jamming it out with his band, got the crowd going and made it such a different song in comparison to what you hear on the radio. "Vultures" and "Gravity" were the only other older songs he played.

The ladies of the audience definitely had no complaints, as they were all mesmerised by his hands on the guitar.

John was a bit rusty in parts, restarting one or two songs again which actually made it more of a great feel and non mechanical. The best interaction was when he missed the start of one of his new songs and the crowd laughed, before teasing everyone by starting the intro to "No Such Thing" suggesting he could play that in his sleep. Everyone wished that he kept going!
