In 2009, Australian Idol will take on an exciting new shape, with both performance and eliminations to air in one major two-hour show each week on Sunday nights.
An international Idol first, the Super Sunday episodes of Australian Idol will be jam packed with all the drama of the cliffhanging verdict and the excitement of the Idol's performances, and for the first time the voting lines will actually open during the show.
Hosted by Andrew G, the live two-hour shows will feature guest judges and industry mentors throughout the season alongside judges Dicko, Marcia and new judge JD Springbett. Ricki-Lee Coulter will also return this season to co-host the live shows and
offer her support to contestants throughout the audition process.
The new Australian Idol Super Sundays will kick off with a bang!
A group performance to reflect each show's musical theme and mentor's influence plus exclusive live performances from our guest judges and mentors.
Straight after the big opener, tension will permeate the air with the nail biting elimination, when one of our Idols will sing for one last time and then leave the stage in a
blaze of glory. The Idols will then raise the roof again with the iconic individual Idol LIVE performances to prove their worthiness for this year's title.
The reality of such a fresh elimination will bring forth compelling and powerful performances from the contestants still standing, some will rise to this challenge whilst others may stumble under the pressure. Throughout the show you will be reminded how to support your favourite Idol.
There will be new musical themes introduced for the first time to Australian Idol as well as the inclusion of international and local mentors throughout the series. Not to mention, the introduction of celebrity guest judges to the judging panel. 2008 saw the likes of Cyndi Lauper, Jermaine Jackson, Kirk Pengilly, Chris Isaak and P!nk, and in 2009 expect to see more musical icons than ever before.
It's going to be as exciting for our viewers at home as it will be for our Idols.
Instruments will once again play an important role for the contestants, as they have done since their introduction in 2006. As always, the Idol contestants have full creative control over their song choices and musical arrangements, along with guidance from Idol's Musical Directors, and Vocal Coaches.
Contestants will perform weekly in a number of musical genres, showcasing their vocals to Australia and competing for the viewer's vote.
Week by week, the number of performers will be reduced by one until the Australian public is presented with our two favourite Idols, competing for the coveted title of Australian Idol. Although there can only be one winner, Australian Idol has proven to be invaluable to so many of the contestants over the series, with numerous going on to launch their own successful careers in the entertainment industry.
