Review: Lady Gaga and the Pussycat Dolls Fight it Out On-Stage in Melbourne!

29 May 2009

With all the hype surrounding Lady GaGa it was hard not to get caught up, and from the moment the video screen flicked on - you knew you were in for something completely different.

Starting with her latest single 'Lovegame' the Melbourne crowd could only be swept up in the magic that was Lady Gaga. Smashing out hit after hit in some of the most elaborate costumes ever seen at Rod Laver Arena, she had the crowd in the palm of her hand.

At times her "art" seemed lost on some members of the crowd, but her theatrics and pure talent drew them back in the time of a quick costume change; from a near nude leotard and bubble outfit accompanying a toned down version of Poker Face, finishing off with a high paced dance-dance-dance-a-thon version of Poker Face she made sure the crowd wouldn't forget the Haus of Gaga for a very long time.

Following on from Miz Gaga, were some band called the Pussycat Dolls. Oh that's right, the "headliners" of the show (who were very nearly blown out of the water by the talented New Yorker)!

That's not to say PCD didn't rock - they sure did - from their faux eyelashes right down to their platform boots! Sure, PCD aren't exactly known for their live singing, but being that they're all professional dancers, you know they are going to put on a show!

With Jessica Sutta out for the count with a back injury, the remaining four 'Dolls put on a show without her and seeing as Nicole is pretty much the only that does any singing, it didn't seem to make a difference!

That said, I was surprised to notice that the self proclaimed "baby" of PCD, 24 year old Melody Thornton, actually did take over singing duties at certain times during the show - and DAMN - where have they been hiding her??! She can actually sing!

That can't be said for the other two of the clan - Ashley "flippy hair" Roberts and Kimberly "stick your bum up in the air" Wyatt, whose jobs purely consist of looking hot and gyrating their way around the arena.

Highlights included the numerous bizarre but very fun dance remixes of PCD songs that were launched into with frenzied dance routines and the encore of all encores, finishing off with their hit from their latest 'Doll Domination' called 'When I Grow Up' and the 'Slumdog Millionaire' favourite 'Jai Ho'.

As far as the appropriateness of PCD goes, I honestly think it's not right for parents to send their kids along to a show like this. With lyrics like "You got real big brains, but I'm looking at your ****" and "I'm a do my thing while you playing with your ****", it's really hard for little girls to see the difference between PCD's supposed "girl power" and what's just a bit of fun.

Basically PCD and Lady Gaga = good, clean, older fun!

Did you check out the PCD/Lady Gag tour?? What did you think?
